At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Türkiye has long served as a bridge between East and West. Centuries-old mosques stand in contrast to modern business districts, and traditional tea gardens sit alongside modern cafés. A combination of modernized industry and traditional agriculture has made Türkiye one of the largest economies in the world. Turks are marked by close-knit communities, exceptional hospitality, and a strong sense of honor.
Despite continued growth, inflation and productivity issues undermine Türkiye’s economy. Even though the nation’s economy is strong, the nation has one of the highest rates of income inequality in Europe, and Turks can still struggle to provide for basic needs. A history of conflict between Türkiye and ethnic Kurds, who previously sought independence, still affects the nation today. Kurds make up about a quarter of the population, and in the past, this tension erupted in violence and took thousands of lives. Currently, Türkiye’s relationship with the Kurds and other minorities has improved, but members of these groups continue to experience surveillance, censorship, and imprisonment. Ethnic groups are not the only ones whose freedoms are restricted. Anyone in society can face penalties for criticizing the government. Law enforcement is quick to shut down gatherings that may challenge the authority of the state.
These types of restrictions also affect the Church, and numerous churches have been shut down by authorities with little warning. Christianity is considered a threat to the security of the nation, especially since being a Muslim is culturally considered an important part of being a Turk. Though Türkiye was once home to many New Testament churches, 96 percent of Türkiye is Muslim, and hostility and persecution against Christians is strong. Family pressure, social suspicion toward Christianity, and government restrictions make evangelism difficult. Despite these hard hearts, God continues to offer salvation for those who repent and turn to him.
